Shoveler

John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge, Pennsylvania.

A relatively common winter visitor to our Mid-Atlantic states. This male was part of a small flock working the shallow water near shore. I lay quietly, and eventually they swam toward me. Shovelers are dippers, not flippers: they use their enormous bills to sieve and scoop food from the water and mud. A little farther out on the lagoon, Mallards and Gadwalls went head down rump up in their search for the same seeds and little creatures.
