Savannah Sparrow

Dixon Meadows Preserve, Pennsylvania

The Savannah Sparrow has several—if subtle—regional variations in appearance, especially in plumage; this bird appears to be the “standard” type for this Eastern location. Savannahs like grassy, open areas with shrubs and thickets for cover when needed; they are somewhat bold and inquisitive, and will bound up and not down in that same cover in order to scope out a visitor. At Dixon, I see them most often during the migration months, especially October.
