Indigo Bunting

John HeinzNational Wildlife Refuge, Pennsylvania

This species’sweet, conversational song provides a fitting background to the unhurried days of summer. Indigo Buntings like open areas with enough shrubs and trees for perching, singing, surveying, and nesting. In my experience, they are somewhat particular about grass length—they like it tall!—so don’t mow those fields too early if you can help it.
