Blue-gray Gnatcatcher
Ridley Creek State Park, Pennsylvania.
These tiny, slender, long-tailed birds start showing up in our area early in April. Their mewing calls usually come from well overhead in the trees, but this flowering Redbush had attracted insects and the Gnatcatcher too. Some of the April birds continue north—after a day or two of naps and gnats, that is—but quite a few stay and breed in the refuge.
