Common Yellowthroat
Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, Delaware
Born and raised on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, I miss this bird’s former name, but I do admit that the new (-ish) modifier does work—these delightful warm-weather residents are common and widespread, in any brushy, weedy, reedy habitat, preferably near water. They usually stay deep in their thickets, but they are restless and inquisitive, and occasionally perch up high and take a look around. Their loudly fluted witchety-witchety-witchety is part of the summer landscape at Bombay Hook.
