Cerulean Warbler
Northern Maryland.
This jewel of a bird breeds (among other places) along the craggy, forested banks of the Susquehanna where it cuts between Maryland and Pennsylvania. They are usually more easily heard than seen, for they often stay at the very tops of tall trees, as if determined to play a game of mirroring colors between their backs and the sky—so I was delighted to come across this individual as he foraged in the lower reaches of a shady ravine.
