Barn Swallow
John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge, Philadelphia.
Barn Swallows are still fairly common summer visitors at this location, although much declined from former abundance here and in many parts of the world. These superb fliers rarely sit still; you can see that nervous energy even after this male has settled on the plush and somnolent surface of Cattail stalk; he settles and resettles, responding to each dip and brush of wind as if impatient to return to the air.
